Jelly Belly p/b Kenda Wins in Back-to-Back Races

Sergio Hernandez won the Barrio Logan Grand Prix on Saturday, and Brad Huff followed up with a victory in the Dana Point Grand Prix on Sunday.

Team director Danny Van Haute said that when he was looking at the race schedule for Southern California, he thought Barrio Logan would be a great warm-up for Dana Point, an NRC race. And it would seem the strategy worked.

At Dana Point on Sunday, the five Jelly Belly riders were again facing teams fielding six riders.

“We were at a little disadvantage, but the guys really played this race as top professionals,” Van Haute said.

Huff credited Hernandez for putting the team in a position to win at the end.

“Sergio was in several moves early on and was able to drive the most threatening break of the day for what seemed like a sure thing.  Coming in to the final few laps, a few of us had managed to set up just behind United Healthcare’s leadout train, then some bad luck caused us to lose contact with each other. Only Sergio and I were left,” Huff said. “On the last lap Sergio put me into the perfect position, right on UHC’s leadout train. It wasn’t until the final few meters did I realize we had pulled off an upset win. Thanks to such great teamwork, Jelly Belly presented by Kenda pulled off our first two big wins of the season.”

Brad Huff Edges Justin Williams at Dana Point Grand Prix

Jelly Belly outplays a stacked UnitedHealthcare team leading to Brad Huff’s second Dana Point Grand Prix win.

Twenty-two-year old Justin Williams (CashCall Mortgage) placed second while 20-year old Ben Swedberg (California Giant Berry Farms) took third ahead of fourth place Hilton Clarke (UnitedHealthcare).

“It’s impressive,” Huff said afterwards. “UnitedHealthcare took the front with about seven to go and I didn’t know if it was going to happen because it was pretty hectic behind them. My team just did a hell of an effort to get me back up into position and I was able to finish it off.”

“It feels great [to win a second Dana Point race],” Huff went on. “I’ve had a pretty rough season so far. I crashed in Taiwan and separated my AC joint, so I’m just happy to be here.” He explained that he still has not fully recovered from the injury. “As long as I don’t fall it’s OK.”

Laura Van Gilder Wins Historic Roswell Criterium

Congratulations to Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom-Rose Bandit Racing) for her Historic Roswell Criterium win. Her win came at the second stop on the USA Crits Speed Week where she topped USA Crits series leader Erica Allar (RideClean-Patentit.com) and Sarah Fader (Pepper Palace-Spin-Tech Training) in a bunch sprint.

“Experience and having a good team that I can rely on behind me (made the difference),” said Van Gilder. “Today I really felt a lot of pressure, and it helps keep me calm to know that I don’t have to cover everything because they’re doing a great job.”
